Evidence! We all want it! We know it when we see it. But – how do we test for the use of evidence in clinical decision making? Recently the USMLE program began development of new testing formats designed to assess an examinee’s evidence-based decision making. Two new assessment formats are under development in support of this project: Drug Ad Format, which will include MCQ-based item sets that assess examinees’ ability to apply their knowledge of biostatistics, epidemiology, pharmacology and/or public health in appraising information provided in drug advertisements; and Abstract Format, which will include MCQ-based item sets that assess examinees’ ability to apply their knowledge of biostatistics, epidemiology, and/or public health in appraising information provided in an article abstract.
Miguel Paniagua, M.D., Medical Advisor Test Materials Development for the National Board of Medical Examiners will provide updates and insights into the development process for the USMLE as well as valuable information that can help us in our curriculum development and assessment strategies for this vital clinical skill that is part of our Institutional Learning Objectives!
