Book Report: Understanding the Gen Z Student

The Chronicle of Higher Education has published a book: Understanding the Gen Z Student, with articles and topics covering today’s Gen Z students who we are now seeing entering into graduate education, the role of faculty in the educational process of these students, major shifts in student culture, and the role of AI in the classroom. This session will provide an overview of the book, discussions about what it means in our roles a WesternU, strategies to meet the needs of the new student, and opportunities to share and discuss our experiences and solutions to current challenges. Attendees will have the opportunity to download a free copy of the book on a first-come, first-served basis (up to 20).

At the end of this session, attendees will:

  1. Be able to identify characteristics of the Gen Z student and what areas of learning and academia are considered challenging to them.
  2. Identify what Gen Z students expect or perceive about the classroom and educational environment
  3. Discuss the changing role or expectations of faculty in teaching Gen Z students.
  4. Identify underlying factors influencing Gen Z in the educational environment
  5. Identify the needs of Gen Z students in the classroom and explore strategies to improve educational outcomes.
