Learning objectives: The basics on “how to” write clear learning objectives

Learning objectives are the basis of any learning event. Ideally, learning objectives should be shared with the learners so that they understand what is expected to be covered by the end of the session. If they are not shared, they at least provide the “structural bones” of the lesson or learning episode. Learning objectives also serve as a map for writing assessments of student learning. This session will help you create learning objectives that are clear and communicate expectations to the learners.

By the end of this session, the attendee will be able to:

• Recognize the common mistakes that prevent a learning objective from being helpful to learners
• List, describe and apply the SMART steps of creating a learning objective
• Describe and utilize the “Learning Objective Stair Step” chart to create clear learning objectives
