Slash through Misinformation: Shift to SIFT

Evaluating online information is an important skill, because misinformation can have such serious consequences. Participants will learn how to determine whether a story is trustworthy using the technique known as SIFT. It’s simple, fast, and reliable. After seeing the skills be demonstrated, participants will be able to practice with scenarios found online.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Investigate the source of an online claim
• Locate additional, or better, coverage of the story
• Trace claims to the primary source
• Determine the expertise of an author
