20 Minute Mentor | How Should We Measure Teaching Effectiveness?

May 21, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are the most common tools for measuring instructor effectiveness. However, there is a large and growing literature documenting some of the major problems with SETs. These findings have motivated a national conversation about measurement of instructor effectiveness and the meaningfulness of statistical data collected from student evaluations. Join us for a facilitated discussion while we view the 20 minute mentor video on measuring teaching effectiveness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the problems of inequality and fairness with SETs (student evaluations of teaching)
  • Discuss the problems of methodology and measurement in assessing teaching
  • Discuss the benefits of not solely relying on SETs to assess teaching for evaluation of candidates for hire, promotion and merit
