Webinar – How to Help Online Learning Students Manage Their Vulnerabilities and Grow Their Resilience
October 14, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am
“This is a Partner Webinar will be hosted by the Grit & Growth Mindset Faculty Learning Community”
Some students are more vulnerable than others. Some students are more vulnerable at particular points in their journey than others, and these vulnerabilities can be either temporary or occurrent. Some students manage their vulnerability and risk of, for example, falling behind, others not so much.
For colleges and universities, the challenge for faculty is to not exacerbate vulnerabilities, but to engage students to find ways to help them grow their resilience.
Join Professor Paul Prinsloo from the University of South Africa (UNISA) as he outlines the competencies faculty and instructors require to respond to student vulnerability and encourage resiliency in the context of remote teaching during the pandemic. Five key questions are addressed:
- How do we understand (student) vulnerability and resilience?
- How do we identify these vulnerabilities?
- What student data do we use and why?
- What are our assumptions about these data/categories?
- How can we prevent vulnerabilities in our systems and help students build their resiliency?
Professor Prinsloo also reviews the risks we need to be aware of in relation to data-use and privacy. Four Key Takeaways:
- An understanding of student vulnerabilities and resilience, particularly “at risk” students.
- An ability to look at how the behaviour of others heighten student vulnerabilities.
- A knowledge of how analytics can be used to help faculty, instructors and other service professionals to support vulnerable students.
- An appreciation of the “downside” of data and analytics as the basis for interventions.
